What is Oncology?

Oncology is a branch of medicine which deals with the prevention, and treatment of cancer. A medical professional who practices oncology calls an oncologist or it can be understood as an oncologist is a physician who works in the field of oncology, the branch of medicine that deals with cancer.

Types of Oncology care at Sentara Hospital

Field of Oncology has three major areas: medical, surgical and radiation.

  • A medical oncologist treats cancer using chemotherapy or other medications, as targeted therapy or immunotherapy.
  • A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. The surgical oncologist also performs certain types of biopsies to help diagnose cancer.
  • A radiation oncologist treats cancer using radiation therapy.
